Italy’s strangest festivals of food

When I was last in Italy a friend had just come back from her daughter’s parent teacher evening. Education hadn’t been discussed. Instead the whole of an animated conversation had been about the children’s lunchtime menu. The selection of delicacies – that would rank as a highlight in many restaurants – were discussed and reviewed, chosen and rejected. Even the brand of mineral water came up for discussion – and was changed.

In a country so utterly obsessed with food it’s not surprising that there are some notable food festivals. But it’s not all pasta, truffles and regional wines. Some of the choices of food the Italians choose to celebrate are strange – while others are downright weird.
